Abstract
Despite a rapid increase in usage of smartphones among infants and toddlers, research and policies regarding smartphone use is not sufficient. A systematic review of all published literature providing data on the effect of media and smart devices on infants and toddlers was done and thirteen articles, which conducted vertical analyses, were finally selected. The effects of smart devices and media were categorized as obesity, language and cognitive development, emotional and behavioral development, and social skills and attachment, which were generally negative on development. We also discussed policies and guidelines about smartphone use by infants and toddlers, and emphasized the need for a national prospective cohort study on smartphone use among infants and toddlers.
